The US Department of State/ USAID released their updated Horn of Africa food security map and draught fact sheet today. While Somalia is the only country with areas designated as famine, at the moment the raw numbers of people in need of assistance are much higher in Ethiopia and the same in Kenya. Of course Ethiopia is plagued by long-term hunger conditions. Somalia’s situation is exacerbated by the political climate, making its humanitarian risk that much graver. Kenya, on the other hand, is a much more stable country, but the numbers there have been inflated by the movement of people from famine affected areas into Kenya.
