AFRICOM Bids Farewell to General Ward

On March 5, 2011, AFRICOM headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany bid farewell to Combatant Commander General William “Kip” Ward on the eve of both his retirement and his 62nd birthday. Later this week, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates will preside over the change of command ceremony for incoming Combatant Commander, General Carter F. Ham.

General Ham brings with him a wealth of experience from his distinguished 35 years of military service, degrees in political science (BA) and national security (MA) from John Carroll University and the Navy War College, and most recently, command experience as the 34th Commander of the United States Army Europe.

With the recent developments in North Africa and the ongoing need for engagement in sub-Saharan Africa, it will be interesting to see how General Ham collaborates with Central Command and balances competing demands for his limited pool of forces.
